Gerben van Lent presents paper on "Risks and benefits of computer-based testing versus paper-and-pencil testing" - 02/10/2008

In a workshop organised by the Educational Testing Institute, Reykjavik, Iceland, the European Commission Joint Research Centre (IPSC), and the Centre for Research on Lifelong Learning (CRELL) on the 29th and 30th of September in Iceland, Gerben van Lent, Executive Director of ETS Global, presented a paper on “Risks and benefits of computer-based testing versus paper-and-pencil testing”. The Expert Workshop was entitled “The Transition to Computer-Based Assessment: Lessons learned from the PISA 2006 Computer Based Assessment of Science (CBAS) and implications for large scale testing”, and was supported by the Indicators and Analysis Division of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The main themes of the workshop were comparison between paper and pencil tests and computer based assessment; electronic tests and gender differences; and adaptive versus linear computer-based assessment. Gerben van Lent’ s presentation fell under the third category. 

A number of invited high-level experts, both in computer-based and
traditional assessment came together during the workshop in order to discuss relevant research based mainly on the PISA 2006 Computer-Based Assessment of Science (CBAS).
