What is the TOEFL® Junior™ test?

The TOEFL® Junior™ test is a distinct product within the growing TOEFL® family of English-language assessments.

The TOEFL® Junior™ test measures the degree to which younger students have attained proficiency in the academic and social English-language skills representative of their instructional environments. It is a well-designed, objective measure of English proficiency that gives teachers useful information about a student’s skills and progress. The TOEFL® Junior™ test is a general English proficiency assessment that is not based on / limited to any specific curriculum.

What is the format of the TOEFL® Junior™ test?

The TOEFL® Junior™ test is a 110-minute multiple-choice test that consists of 126 questions divided into three sections: Listening Comprehension, Language Form and Meaning, and Reading Comprehension.

It is a paper-based test, with each section featuring 42 questions.

Why the TOEFL® Junior™ test?

  • A natural extension of the TOEFL® brand but specifically geared to the language learning needs of (lower) secondary school students, the TOEFL® Junior™ emphasises building communicative skills to better prepare candidates for academic, workplace and personal life success
  • It provides parents and educators with objective information about student progress in developing English-language skills over time
  • In order to help clarify the meaning of the test scores, TOEFL® Junior™ test scores were mapped to scores levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL)

How can I use the TOEFL® Junior™ test?

Designed for middle-school pupils aged between 11 and 14 years old, it is made to help teachers, schools, and parents take low to medium stake decisions. The TOEFL® Junior™ test can be used to:

  • Place pupils in the right level of English learning
  • Tailor and customise curriculum
  • Assess progress from the beginning to the end of a course  by administering the test multiple times as a check-point
  • Find the right book with the Lexile® measure

The test is not meant for a pass or fail decision; it can, however, be requested as part of an admission process.
